“And this is the testimony of John . . . “I am not the Christ . . . I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’ . . . I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know, even he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” Refer to John 1:19-28.

“The fear of death has been swallowed up; life brings us joy with the promise of eternal happiness. No one is shut out from this joy…Our Lord, victor over sin and death, finding no man free from sin, came to free us all.” St. Leo the Great.

Loving Father, You call us to joy and happiness because in our midst is One greater than any of us; the Life-giving Word from You our God. Give us the grace to mend our ways so that we may worthily welcome Him in our lives and homes. Amen.

"Y este es el testimonio de Juan . . . "Yo no soy el Mesias [...] Yo soy la voz del que clama en el desierto: 'Enderezen el camino del Señor' . . . Yo bautizo con agua; pero entre ustedes hay uno a quien no conocen, el que viene detrás de mí, cuya correa de la sandalia no soy digno de desatar". Juan 1:19-28.

Padre amoroso, Tú nos llamas al gozo y a la felicidad porque en medio de nosotros hay Uno más grande que cualquiera de nosotros; la Palabra vivificante de Ti nuestro Dios. Danos la gracia de enmendar nuestros caminos para que podamos acogerlo dignamente en nuestras vidas y hogares. Amén.

Homily for the Third Sunday of Advent by Deacon Mike Betliskey
In old movies or television shows, a person would use a mirror to send a message. One would point a mirror toward the sun and move it around a particular way: short bursts of light for the dots and long ones for dashes. Of course, the sender and receiver needed to know Morse Code to understand the message.
Like the reflecting mirror with a message, John the Baptist was not the Light but reflected the Light of Christ. God gave John a calling, a mission, and a message. His calling was to testify to the true Light. He came to bring the truth about the Light to a darkened world. His mission was to witness to the Light so others would come to believe and reflect that Light. His message was to “make straight the way of the Lord.” In another translation, “Make it easy for the Lord to arrive!” His role was to prepare people to mirror the Light more by turning toward the Light through embracing the Life, the Way, and the goodness of God.
The Jewish authorities were in darkness as to who John the Baptist was and what his mission and message were. The eyes of their hearts became blinded to the Light because they were obsessed with power, self-importance, and the world’s allurements.
We should ask ourselves how well the mirror of our hearts reflects Christ’s light: faintly, brightly, or somewhere in between. Sin, vice, and self-centeredness become the causes for the mirror to reflect little or no Light, while virtue, love, and goodness make the reflective beam shine the brightest. The in-between state is when venial sins smudge that mirror, dimming our reflecting light. 
Christ invites us to reflect His Light and witness His love through our actions. He calls us to heed John’s voice to clean our mirrors through repentance, changing our way toward the Light. Become that shining light to others by supporting them to do the same transformative cleansing.
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit bolsters our testimony and intensifies the reflecting Light. He lights up the way of holiness, deepening our relationship with God. He enlightens us to know God’s Word and strengthens us to accept and follow His will. He fills our hearts with gratitude and God’s joy. Through this joy, God embraces us with His loving, caring arms to support us through challenging times. Happiness is fleeting, but that joy is forever. He has given us gifts and talents to share and build up the Body of Christ. He guides us to those in need. 
The Spirit inflames our hearts to witness to the Light. Just as the person used a mirror to share a message, and John shared, Christ calls us to share His joyful message. Christ loves us, saved us, will come again, and wants to come into our hearts to reflect His Light more.

En películas o programas de televisión antiguos, una persona usaría un espejo para enviar un mensaje. Uno apuntaría un espejo hacia el sol y lo movería por una manera particular: breves ráfagas de luz para los puntos y los largos para los guiones. Por supuesto, el remitente y el receptor necesitaban conocer el código Morse para comprender el mensaje.
Al igual que el espejo reflectante con un mensaje, Juan el Bautista no era la luz, sino que reflejaba la luz de Cristo. Dios le dio un llamado a John, una misión y un mensaje. Su llamado fue testificar a la verdadera luz. Llegó a traer la verdad sobre la luz a un mundo oscuro. Su misión era testigo de la luz para que otros llegaran a creer y reflejar esa luz. Su mensaje era "hacer recto el camino del Señor". En otra traducción, "¡Haz que llegue el Señor!" Su papel era preparar a las personas para reflejar más la luz girando hacia la luz abrazando la vida, el camino y la bondad de Dios.
Las autoridades judías estaban en la oscuridad en cuanto a quién era Juan el Bautista y cuál era su misión y mensaje. Los ojos de sus corazones se cegaron a la luz porque estaban obsesionados con el poder, la importancia personal y las alluraciones del mundo.
Deberíamos preguntarnos qué tan bien el espejo de nuestros corazones refleja la luz de Cristo: débil, brillante o en algún punto intermedio. El pecado, el vicio y el egocentrismo se convierten en las causas de que el espejo refleje poca o ninguna luz, mientras que la virtud, el amor y la bondad hacen que el rayo reflectante brille el más brillante. El estado intermedio es cuando los pecados veniales manchan ese reflejo, atenuando nuestra luz reflectante.
Cristo nos invita a reflejar su luz y presenciar su amor a través de nuestras acciones. Nos llama a prestar atención a la voz de John para limpiar nuestros espejos a través del arrepentimiento, cambiando hacia la luz. Conviértete en esa luz brillante para los demás al apoyarlos para hacer la misma limpieza transformadora.
La efusión del Espíritu Santo refuerza nuestro testimonio e intensifica la luz reflectante. Él ilumina el camino de la santidad, profundizando nuestra relación con Dios. Nos ilumina para conocer la Palabra de Dios y nos fortalece para aceptar y seguir su voluntad. Él llena nuestros corazones de gratitud y alegría de Dios. A través de esta alegría, Dios nos abraza con sus brazos amorosos y cariñosos para apoyarnos en tiempos desafiantes. La felicidad es fugaz, pero esa alegría es para siempre. Nos ha dado dones y talentos para compartir y construir el cuerpo de Cristo. Nos guía a los necesitados.
El espíritu inflama nuestros corazones para presenciar la luz. Así como la persona usó un espejo para compartir un mensaje, y John compartió, Cristo nos llama a compartir su alegre mensaje. Cristo nos ama, nos salvó, volverá y quiere entrar en nuestros corazones para reflejar
