“Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews? For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up . . . And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” Mark 15:9-14.

“Virtues are formed by prayer. Prayer preserves temperance, suppresses anger, and prevents emotions of pride and envy. Prayer draws into the soul the Holy Spirit and raises you to heaven.” St. Ephraem of Syria.

Lord Jesus, envy causes so much suffering and destruction in our relations and activities. Today we begin Holy Week; forgive our envy-filled life and renew us so that we may find release and victory through Your passion. Amen.

"¿Quieren que les suelte al Rey de los judíos? Porque se dio cuenta de que era por envidia que los sumos sacerdotes lo habían entregado . . . Pilato les dijo otra vez: «¿Qué haré con el hombre a quien llamáis el Rey de los judíos? Y volvieron a gritar: «¡Crucifícalo!» Y Pilato les dijo: ¿Qué mal ha hecho? Pero ellos gritaban aún más: «¡Crucifícalo!» Marcos 15:9-14.

"Las virtudes se forman con la oración. La oración preserva la templanza, suprime la ira y previene las emociones de orgullo y envidia. La oración atrae en el alma al Espíritu Santo y te eleva al cielo." San Efrén de Siria.

Señor Jesús, la envidia causa tanto sufrimiento y destrucción en nuestras relaciones y actividades. Hoy comenzamos la Semana Santa; perdona nuestra vida llena de envidia y renuévanos para que podamos encontrar la liberación y la victoria a través de Tu pasión. Amén.

Mexico’s oppressive regime aimed to crush the influence of the Catholic Church in the late 1920s to the 1930s. The regime closed down churches and schools and persecuted the Church. As a result, the Church went underground and became clandestine. In defense of the Church, many people resisted the regime through the Cristero War. Many died during that war.
One of these martyrs was Saint José Luis Sánchez del Rio, who was martyred at fourteen. He loved his faith and had a strong devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. During the war, he tried to attend Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, or make a confession whenever he heard a priest was available.
He desperately wanted to be a Cristero and stand up for his faith. He begged his mother, saying, “Mama, do not let me lose the opportunity to gain Heaven so easily and so soon.” Eventually, he was allowed to join the effort as a flag bearer. During a battle, the enemy captured him and asked him to deny his faith and the Cristero cause. Despite being tortured terribly, he refused. Because of that torture, each step he took to his martyrdom was excruciatingly painful. On his death walk, he prayed the rosary for his enemies and sang songs to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Asked again before his death to deny his faith, he refused and proclaimed, “I will never give in. ¡Vivo Cristo Rey y Santa María de Guadalupe!”
Though we do not live under an oppressive regime, but we live in a time when America has become more secularized in the last few years, where Christian values and morals wane. Like our crucified Lord and Saint José, we live as followers with an uncompromising faith that bows to, worships, and lives for the crucified Lord, only not bowing to egotistical, amoral secularization. ¡Vivo Cristo Rey, who suffered, died, and rose from the dead for us.

El régimen opresivo de México pretendía aplastar la influencia de la Iglesia católica desde finales de los años veinte hasta los treinta. El régimen cerró iglesias y escuelas y persiguió a la Iglesia. Como resultado, la Iglesia pasó a la clandestinidad y se volvió clandestina. En defensa de la Iglesia, muchas personas resistieron al régimen mediante la Guerra Cristera. Muchos murieron durante esa guerra.
Uno de estos mártires fue San José Luis Sánchez del Río, quien fue martirizado a los catorce años. Amaba su fe y tenía una gran devoción a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Durante la guerra, intentó asistir a Misa, a la Adoración Eucarística o confesarse cada vez que escuchaba que había un sacerdote disponible.
Quería desesperadamente ser cristero y defender su fe. Le suplicó a su madre, diciendo: “Mamá, no me dejes perder la oportunidad de ganar el Cielo tan fácilmente y tan pronto”. Finalmente, se le permitió unirse al esfuerzo como abanderado. Durante una batalla, el enemigo lo capturó y le pidió que negara su fe y la causa cristera. A pesar de haber sido torturado terriblemente, se negó. Debido a esa tortura, cada paso que dio hacia su martirio fue insoportablemente doloroso. En su camino de la muerte, rezó el rosario por sus enemigos y cantó canciones a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Cuando se le pidió nuevamente antes de morir que negara su fe, se negó y proclamó: “Nunca me rendiré. ¡Vivo Cristo Rey y Santa María de Guadalupe!”
Aunque no vivimos bajo un régimen opresivo, vivimos en una época en la que Estados Unidos se ha secularizado más en los últimos años, donde los valores y la moral cristianos decaen. Al igual que nuestro Señor crucificado y San José, vivimos como seguidores con una fe intransigente que se inclina, adora y vive para el Señor crucificado, pero sin inclinarse ante una secularización egoísta y amoral. ¡Vivo Cristo Rey, que sufrió, murió y resucitó de entre los muertos por nosotros.
