Monday January 1, 2024 - New Year’s Day: Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God, World Day of Peace

“At the time: The shepherds went with haste to Bethlehem, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” Luke 2:16-20.

“All the sins of your life seem to be rising up against you. Don’t give up hope! On the contrary, call your holy mother Mary, with the faith and abandonment of a child. She will bring peace to your soul.” St. Jose Maria Escriva.

Lord Jesus, on this first day of 2024 we pray to be like our Mother Mary: may we be in a tight relationship with her Son; taking in all that is praised of Him and pondering on it to be moved by Jesus and graced by Him every moment of this year 2024. May all that we engage in generate peace all around us. Amen.

Lunes 1 de enero 2024, Año Nuevo: Solemnidad de María, Santa Madre de Dios, Jornada Mundial de la Paz

"En aquel tiempo, los pastores fueron de prisa a Belén, y encontraron a María y a José, y al niño acostado en un pesebre. Y cuando lo vieron, dieron a conocer lo que los ángeles les habían dicho acerca de este niño; y todos los que los oyeron se maravillaron de lo que les decían los pastores. Pero María guardó todas estas cosas, meditándolas en su corazón". Lucas 2:16-20.

"Todos los pecados de tu vida parecen estar levantándose contra ti. ¡No pierdas la esperanza! Al contrario, llama a tu santa madre María, con la fe y el abandono de un niño. Ella traerá paz a tu alma." San José María Escrivá.

Señor Jesús, en este primer día de 2024 oramos para ser como nuestra Madre María: que estemos en una relación estrecha con su Hijo; asimilando todo lo que se alaba de Él y meditando en ello para ser movidos por Jesús y agraciados por Él en cada momento de este año 2024. Que todo lo que hagamos genere paz a nuestro alrededor. Amén.

Homily for Mary, the Mother of God by Deacon Mike Betliskey

At the Council of Ephesus (431), the entire Catholic Church formally taught about the Motherhood of Mary. Mary was a human being just like us, But God chose her to be the Mother of Jesus. She has a unique role in God’s plan as the God-bearer. However, many misconceptions exist about this dogma of the “Mother of God.” For instance, Mary came before God, created God, or gave birth to the Trinity. Instead, the dogma asserts that Mary is not only the Mother of Jesus’ human nature but also the Mother of God because Jesus is the Incarnate Son of God, who is fully divine and fully human.
She is the first disciple. The Gospels portray Mary as the model believer and ideal disciple. She is the prayerful, pure, humble servant who puts God and others first. The Lord is always with her. She has trust and openness. Her fiat at the Annunciation shows she believes in God’s promises. After the Annunciation, she traveled to assist her elderly relative, Elizabeth during her pregnancy. At the Wedding feast at Cana, she observes that the wine has run out and alerts her Son of the situation. She works on the edges and points to her Son. Filled with the Holy Spirit, she helps others open up to the Holy Spirit. She prays with the disciples before Pentecost for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. She ponders or ruminates to digest what has occurred, like what the shepherds told her in today’s Gospel. She needs time to understand what they said to her that her Son is the Messiah and Lord. As we heard in Sunday’s Gospel, Simeon told her that a sword would pierce her soul. Just as her Son suffered, she would suffer as the Mother of God. She stood devastated by the cross of her Son, helplessly watching her Son die a cruel and gruesome death.
We have some big shoes to fit into as Christians and missionary disciples. We intercede to her to ask her Son to transform us to fit into those shoes.
Through her intercession, we ask her Son to bless us in 2024. Keep us from evil and faithful to Him. Open our hearts to feel His presence more by being more attentive to Him moving in our lives and others. May He continue to shower us with His gifts and graces. Fill us with His peace that heals us and makes us whole with Him. May He bring contentment to accept ourselves as He created us. Surround us with calmness by providing us with His safe haven, especially during turbulent times.

En el Concilio de Éfeso (431), toda la Iglesia Católica enseñó formalmente sobre la Maternidad de María. María era un ser humano como nosotros, pero Dios la eligió para ser Madre de Jesús. Ella tiene un papel único en el plan de Dios como portadora de Dios. Sin embargo, existen muchas ideas erróneas sobre este dogma de la "Madre de Dios". Por ejemplo, María se presentó ante Dios, creó a Dios o dio a luz a la Trinidad. En cambio, el dogma afirma que María no sólo es la Madre de la naturaleza humana de Jesús, sino también la Madre de Dios porque Jesús es el Hijo encarnado de Dios, que es plenamente divino y plenamente humano.
Ella es la primera discípula. Los Evangelios retratan a María como la creyente modelo y la discípula ideal. Ella es la sierva humilde, pura y devota que pone a Dios y a los demás en primer lugar. Ora con los discípulos antes de Pentecostés pidiendo el derramamiento del Espíritu Santo. Reflexiona o rumia para digerir lo ocurrido, como le dijeron los pastores en el evangelio de hoy. Necesita tiempo para comprender lo que le dijeron de que su Hijo es el Mesías y Señor. Como escuchamos en el Evangelio del domingo, Simeón le dijo que una espada traspasaría su alma. Así como sufrió su Hijo, ella sufrirá como Madre de Dios. Ella permaneció devastada ante la cruz de su Hijo, viendo impotente a su Hijo sufrir una muerte cruel y espantosa.
Tenemos unos zapatos grandes en los que encajar como cristianos y discípulos misioneros. Intercedemos ante ella para pedirle a su Hijo que nos transforme para encajar en esos zapatos.
Por su intercesión, le pedimos a su Hijo que nos bendiga en el año 2024. Guárdanos del mal y fieles a Él. Abre nuestros corazones para sentir más Su presencia estando más atentos a Él moviéndose en nuestras vidas y en las de los demás. Que Él continúe colmándonos con sus dones y gracias. Llénanos con Su paz que nos sana y nos hace completos con Él. Que Él traiga contentamiento para aceptarnos a nosotros mismos tal como Él nos creó. Rodéanos de calma brindándonos Su refugio seguro, especialmente en tiempos turbulentos.
